Consumer Rights and Protection
The Fair Debt Collections Practices Act governs how creditors can collect against debtors. Creditors may not:
- Contact a relative or other third-party person who does not owe the debt
- Threaten you into paying your debt without intention to actually carry out that threat
- Making harassing phone calls early in the morning, late at night, or at other unreasonable times
- Call you at work when it is a violation of an employer's policy or after you have requested no work calls
- Tell your employer why they are calling
- Threaten arrest or harm
- Make false representations of your debt
- Harass you after you filed for bankruptcy
